Welcome to the Lowell Bioinformatics Club! Our official full name is the Genes and Diseases and Symptoms Club, shorthanded as the GIDAS club. We are dedicated to teaching club members more about genetics, bio-tech, disease awareness and precision medicine. In the fall semester, we learn about basic biology and computational biology/programming concepts and techniques to prepare for the annual all-state Genes and Health Contest. These include gene expression and regulation, genomic databases and biomarkers, R programming, and biotechnology techniques. During the spring semester, we focus on writing an abstract and research paper related the this year's disease of focus, which we present at the nationwide High School Research Conference. Anyone who is interested and passionate about computational biology is free to join meetings-- no prior experience is necessary! Lowell Bioinformatics Club is affiliated with the 501(c)(3) research organization miRcore, whose mission is to democratize medical research so that anyone can initiate research that matters to them, and is a GIDAS branch of miRcore.
