About Us:
I have three cards. One is red on both sides, another is white on both sides, and the third has one side of each color. I put the cards in a bag and choose one at random, without looking. I put the card on the table and when I open my eyes, the side facing up is white. What are the chances that the other side is also white? Can you solve this problem? We will go over it during our first meeting! (Hint: the answer isn’t ½). Lowell Mathematics Society is a place where members can improve their problem solving and math skills, as well as prepare for competitions. No past experience is required! Our goal is to make sure each and every one of our members can learn and enjoy math in a supportive and motivating environment. In our meetings, we cover content that is not typically taught in a math class. Some days, we host lectures to cover topics important to competition math and share our problem solving strategies. We carefully design problem sets that give you practice and a chance to test your understanding. On other days, we have activities and games that not only expose you to the fun side of math but also offer a great opportunity for you to get to know people and make friends. Occasionally, we also hold in-club competitions—who doesn’t want some bragging rights? We also participate in outside competitions, including the nationwide AMC (American Mathematics Competition) 10/12, the statewide CAML (California Math League), and several regional tournaments like SMT (Stanford Math Tournament) and BMT (Berkeley Math Tournament). Performing well in these competitions greatly enhances the strength of your college application. As a result, many of our former members have been admitted into top colleges such as Harvard, UCLA, and UC Berkeley, among many others. Lowell Math Society is a chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, a national math honor society. This means you can get formal recognition for the skills you develop! We even cover your membership fee!
