Social Awareness Week

Why Building Connections?

TW: Sexual Assault/Rape

Planned by the Co-Community Liaisons, Social Awareness Week shall be an annual event at Lowell High School that spotlights a societal issue and possible solutions for the school community, with the main goal of spreading awareness, understanding, and empathy. This year, our theme is Building Connections: Focusing on Healthy Relationships.

During the Summer of 2020, high school students and alumni across San Francisco bravely came forward with their experiences with. sexual harassment and assault. Our peers shared their stories and they mobilized for justice by sending emails to school officials, demanding rapists and assaulters be held accountable. We as student leaders will continue to support survivors, and we will also take strides to educate students on the topics of harassment, assault, and abuse. Change starts with information.

By the end of Social Awareness Week, participants will be able to understand what sexual assault and sexual harassment is and how to report it. They will be to help their peers and themselves in the. event they have even sexually harassed or assaulted. Participants will recognize. the signs of abuse in relationships and understand how to set clear boundaries. They will be aware of the resources available to them as well as their Title IX rights.

From 1:40-2:40pm, on Monday-Thursday, students will have the opportunity to attend Consent, Community, and Combating Rape Culture presentations. In this presentation, participants examine essential information about consent, myths about rape, allyship, staying safe, identifying & resisting rape culture, and what to do if you or someone you know has been assaulted. Monday will be reserved for freshmen, Tuesday for sophomores, Wednesday for Juniors, and Thursday for Seniors. Registry attendance will be taken at the end of the presentation, however, students must RSVP ahead of time.

From 4-5pm on Tuesday, we will host A Conversation About Health. Relations and on Thursday from 4-5pm we will host a workshop called Navigating Sexual Harassment and Assault. Since these after school workshop topics can be heavy, our workshop provider YAWAV (Young Asian Women Against Violence) can only take up to 120 students per workshop, please RSVP for these events ahead of time.

Also per Social Awareness Week tradition, SBC has a Building Connections Crewneck for sale, where all the profits will go to La Casa de Las Madres, a local non-profit that helps survivors of sexual and domestic violence. You can purchase the crewnecks directly on our Bonfire page.

Lastly, to close out the week, we will have a movie screening of Audrie and Daisy, a film about two young women navigating their lives after sexual assault crimes against them are widely shared. The movie examines the ripple effects on families, friends, schools and the communities around them. The movie screening will. be on Friday, March 19th on Twitch TV.

Consent, Community, and Combating Rape Culture

1:40pm-2:40pm
Students that RSVP for this workshop will have their registry attendance taken at the end of the hour.

In this workshop, participants examine essential information about consent, myths about rape, allyship, staying safe, identifying & resisting rape culture, and what to do if you or someone you know has been assaulted. It is important for our youth to recognize unsafe situations and call out peer behaviors that perpetuate rape culture. Here, we dissect scenarios piece by piece, allowing participants to practice allyship and consent. We also discuss various ways for safe dating, learn how to support survivors of sexual violence, and learn about local resources / crisis lines.

Tuesday: A Conversation About Health Relationships

5:00pm-6:00pm

Learning how to navigate relationships, at any age, can be difficult. In this workshop, participants actively engage in activities and role playing pertinent to various types of relationships that will help them better identify qualities of healthy and unhealthy relationships in both romantic and non-romantic relationships. We also provide resources on health ways for handling conflict with their partners, friends, and families to help avoid escalation during heated arguments.

Thursday: Navigating Assault & Harassment

4:00pm-5:00pm

Sexual harassment is often an overlooked issue in high. schools. While students may be able to identify sexual harassment, some may not know how to assert themselves in such situations or are unclear of the implications of such violence. In this workshop, we will cover various types of harassment including physical, verbal, and visual. Participants will examine scenarios and essential information about consent, myths about rape, allyship, staying safe, identifying & resisting rape culture, and what to do if you or someone you know has been assaulted. We will also discuss various ways for safe dating, learn how to support survivors or sexual violence, and learn about local resources/crisis lines.

Friday: Audrie and Daisy

7:00pm-8:45pm

AUDRIE & DAISY is an urgent real-life drama that examines the ripple effects on families, friends, schools, and communities when two underage young women find that sexual assault crimes against them have been caught on camera.
